About the Collection: Autumn/Winter 2010/11 Title: ‘Ghosts’
This collection is inspired by Berlin and its eventful history, which has left its marks on the insides and outsides of buildings, as well as on the hearts and minds of its people.
There is a certain kind of magical beauty to be found in these traces, the imperfections and contradictions of life ensure stories of the past are not forgotten. We see faded black outlines on a building’s windowless side; the ghost of another building which once used to be there. We see war and revolution in bullet holes in the facades of other buildings, peering inside we see layers of
wallpaper peel off to revealing the colours and stories of past inhabitant’s lives...
Growing up in West Berlin, and experiencing a cityscape with many empty, partly destroyed buildings with vast empty areas in between, designer Faye Smith is still fascinated by the ghosts of a past reality, which tell stories of war, destruction, suffering, creativity, cultural events, friendship and love... and like this transport the city’s past into our present.
In the A/W 2010/11 collection ‘Ghosts’ the designer aspires to reflect the beauty of the faded stories she finds in her home city.
There are light silk dresses, hand-painted to create a subtle and beautiful shade of grey, viscose and silk dresses with silk screen printed antique lace motives, all mixed with leather detailing and menswear inspired accessories to create a cont- rast to the femininity of the painted dresses.
