About the collection ' Lobster Ballet' (Autumn/Winter 09):
The collection is named after a piece by the American artist Joseph Cornell and inspired by his lifework. Cornell is primarily known for his ‘Box Collages’ ,intriguing collections of found objects, which he arranged in small cases. By drawing elements from everyday life, he created artworks of magical beauty.
Faye Smith, the designer behind the label Fay Alice, works in a similar way. She seeks to create modern, feminine clothing by drawing inspiration from inconspicuous, everyday objects, which tell stories of past beauty, a vintage dress, an old piece of lace, a faded book cover…
The combination of seemingly contradictory elements is a recurring theme of the collection: light silk dresses are elaborated with torn tulle details; they are hand-painted or matched with menswear-inspired pieces. The result is modern, elegant clothing with an edgy touch. Recurring, as well, is the two-colour theme: Black and ecru meet bright colours like turquoise and red. Faye Smith uses natural fibres like cotton, silk and wool as primary materials. The collection is aimed at young, fun urbanites.
